WHY VISIT CHINATOWN

The Chinatown heritage area is a favourite among our visitors.

Dating back to the early 1820s, this is where the early Chinese immigrants set up their businesses, homes, places of worship and clan associations. The Chinatown of today is a lively mix of the old and new - traditional businesses and markets sit side-by-side with modern cafes and shops.

While Chinatown remains a vibrant showcase of Singapore Chinese culture, one of its most unique features is its multiculturalism – it is here that you will find a Taoist temple, a Hindu temple, 2 mosques, a Buddhist temple and a Methodist church all within walking distance of each other.

ABOUT THE GEMS OF CHINATOWN TOUR

About the Gems of Chinatown Tour
Join us on this walking tour to uncover these must-see gems of Chinatown:

Thian Hock Keng
Temple

The oldest Chinese Taoist temple in Singapore is an architectural masterpiece that won the prestigious UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for its restoration in 2001.

Sri Mariamman
Temple

The oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, along with its colourful 6-tier entrance tower, is such a significant landmark in Chinatown that 2 streets are named after it. Find out why this Hindu temple is located in Chinatown.

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum

This Tang dynasty style Buddhist temple houses a Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic in a giant stupa made from 320kg of gold. The temple's ornate interiors are stunning and should not be missed.

Along the way, we’ll explore some of the historic streets of Chinatown to admire the conserved shophouses, enjoy the lively atmosphere, and understand more about the lifestyles of the early immigrants. Listen to stories about the Opium Dens, Coolie Houses, Brothels and Death Houses that peppered the streets of Chinatown in the past.

There are 2 ‘bonus’ stops in the tour not mentioned above. We couldn't resist including these because we think you’ll enjoy seeing them. Intrigued? Join us on the tour to find out what these are!

The tour is designed to end at lunch time so it’ll be perfect timing for you to enjoy the specialities of the area – our guide will provide some suggestions.
